Below are a few maps to help you understand where Tokyo is in relation
to the world and Japan. Because Tokyo is a large city, it is difficult to
display street maps on the internet. Detailed Tokyo city street maps are
available from many sources. Many at no charge. See below for Tokyo map
and information sources.
It is important to understand that Tokyo is both the name of the city
and the name of the prefecture it is located in. A prefecture is similar
to a US state. Kind of like New York, New York, both the city and
prefecture have the same name. This sometimes leads to confusion. When
searching the web for information about Tokyo, it may be the prefecture
you are reading about. Just something to keep in mind.

Location Map - First, for the beginners, let's start with the
location of Japan. Japan is located nearby China, Korea and Russia. It
is surrounded by the Sea of Japan to the West, and the Pacific Ocean
to the East. On the map to the right we have noted the distance from
Tokyo to Honolulu Hawaii (3,780 miles) and to San Francisco California
(4,840 miles). |

click the image for a better view. Notice one of the prefectures is
shaded in dark brown, that is the Tokyo prefecture. It is near the
middle on the right side. |

prefecture. The city of Tokyo is further divided into districts know

Tokyo Map & Information Resources:
The
Japan
National Tourist Organization is a great source for regional guides to
Tokyo and more. Japanese travel agencies are our favorite source for maps
and travel information. Some of the agencies we like are; JALPAK, Sunrise
Tours,
Nippon Travel
Agency and
Kintetsu International.
When contacting an agency, explain what your needs are and what kind of
trip you are thinking about to get the best information. They produce some
amazing brochures that will help you plan many aspects of your trip and
even serve as guides while you're there. The
Tokyo Metropolitan
Government publishes a "Welcome to Tokyo Handy Map" that is very nice.
Their map has a unique feature, discounts! Just present the foldable map
at a large number of popular Tokyo attractions to receive discounts on
admissions. Visit
Tokyo Tourism
Info on the web for related information although we could not find
information for obtaining one of these maps through their site.
